Deputy Secretary-General Chang noted that Mayor Lu Shiow-Yen, the only female mayor among the six municipalities, places great importance on promoting gender equality and advancing women’s rights. Under her leadership, Taichung has been dedicated to building a gender-friendly city. Key initiatives include the inter-agency launch of the pioneering “Taichung City Government CEDAW City Review Report,” the implementation of the “Empowering Women in Adverse Situations – Forklift Training Program,” and achieving 100% gender representation compliance on the boards and supervisory committees of public enterprises. In addition, the Social Affairs Bureau has guided district offices in developing innovative gender equality programs, hosted international gender equality forums, and participated in the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women and related NGO parallel events in the United States. These efforts collectively demonstrate the city government's diverse innovation and sustained commitment to advancing gender equality.
According to the Social Affairs Bureau, in addition to receiving the Jin Xin Award - Excellence Award, the Sports Bureau was also honored with the Gender Equality Story Award for its program titled “Hsu Le, Taichung’s Pride – A World Record-Holding Deaflympics Track and Field Champion.” Through the inspiring story of Hsu Le, a Deaflympics gold medalist, the initiative seeks to encourage greater participation in sports among women and persons with disabilities. It aims to break down barriers and stereotypes that have long marginalized women in sports, advocate for gender equality in sports, and ignite a greater passion for sports among the citizens of Taichung.
The Social Affairs Bureau noted that the Taichung City Government will continue to advance gender mainstreaming policies, uphold the principles of CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women), and promote the core values of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality. Efforts will include expanding a variety of awareness campaigns, such as international forums, multimedia competitions, gender equality lectures, and the partnerships with gender-friendly businesses. These initiatives aim to encourage broad public participation in realizing gender equality and in building a more inclusive and diverse city.
