Reimagining the Infinite Possibilities of Later Life! Taichung Social Affairs Bureau Recruits

Every stage of life deserves to be heard! The Social Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Government is inviting older adults with stories to tell, skills to share, a passion for life, and a willingness to inspire others to join the Silver Lifestyle Experts program. An in person and online recruitment briefing will be held on June 22, and applications will be accepted until July 20. Applicants selected through the review process will take part in a free 10 week training program. After passing the evaluation and becoming certified Silver Lifestyle Experts, they will have opportunities to perform and share their experiences in communities, schools, social welfare organizations, and libraries.
The Social Affairs Bureau stated that when older adults step into the community and share their skills, they help overturn stereotypes about aging and promote greater understanding across generations. Since 2015, the Bureau has commissioned the Xiang Shang Education and Culture Foundation to promote the Life Resilience Project for Senior Adults. Over the past 11 years, the program has successfully cultivated 100 Silver Lifestyle Experts, who have held more than 570 activities in communities and reached over 25,000 residents of all ages, including older adults, middle aged adults, youth, and children.
The Social Affairs Bureau noted that Ching-Chi Chang, now 85 years old, has remained actively engaged in community service after retirement and has served as an expert for nine years. Self taught and highly skilled in traditional paper cutting and calligraphy, he has taught and accompanied countless families, older adults, and persons with disabilities. His service has even crossed communities and national borders, transforming his craft into a source of warmth and strength. With a smile, he shared his philosophy of staying young, saying, "As long as your mindset stays young, you can always remain youthful. Age should never be a label for being old. The key is to live a healthy and joyful life".
The Social Affairs Bureau also shared the story of Hsin-Ying Lo, who has had a 20 year connection with line dancing and joined the program last year to share the rhythm of life with communities. She said emotionally that, in the second half of life, what matters is not only outward success, but the deeper meaning behind it. By taking stock of one’s own wisdom and experience and devoting passion to serving society, there is no need to spend a single dollar. Simply by listening and learning, one can make life shine.
The Social Affairs Bureau pointed out that, as Tzu-An Kuo, Chairperson of the Xiang Shang Education and Culture Foundation, has said, these experts demonstrate a sense of ease and elegance that transcends age as they continue contributing their strengths. They embody different ways of growing old and offer the best example of life education. Older adults are warmly invited to join together and create social impact in later life.
