Local people, local sentiment! Taichung's Nanmen Community helps form livable communities with social welfare and cultural richness

Different water sources nurture different cultures and people, and local chronicles capture local sentiments! The Nanguan Community Development Association in South District, Taichung City places great importance on the shared prosperity between residents and the environment. For years, they have preserved the century-old Nanmen Bridge and Nanmen Creek, and transformed the cold spring under the bridge and nearby wasteland into a green oasis known as the Nanmen Secret Garden, a good spot for residents to stroll. The association also curates walking tours for the community and publishes the Nanmen Local Chronicles, detailing the historical background of local landmarks such as the century-old bridge, the cold spring, the clock tower, and the Earth God Temple, ensuring the preservation of the community's culture.
The Social Affairs Bureau noted that Nanmen Community is culturally rich and has been deeply involved in social welfare services. Since 2022, it has been part of a small flagship project led by the bureau and Providence University, serving as a pilot community. The community guides the Gongxue, Pinghe, and Fushun communities in forming a cooperative welfare service team in South District, promoting experience sharing and resource exchange to exhibit the spirit of common good. The community also provides volunteer training in support services for people with disabilities, visitation skills, and relevant professional knowledge. Moreover, it offers horticultural therapy and music movement courses to engage with people with disabilities, aiming to improve their self-care skills and social participation.
In recent years, Nanmen Community has placed great importance on primary prevention and become a pioneer in violence prevention. It leads anti-violence awareness campaigns with other partner units and has won multiple awards from the Ministry of Health and Welfare and Taichung City's Creative Anti-Violence Theater. The community's effective promotion of welfare services has established it as a benchmark in South District. In 2024, it will represent Taichung in the Ministry of Health and Welfare's Excellent Community Competition, hoping to stand out and achieve further success for Taichung City's communities.
