Do you know your neighbors? Taichung’s Humanities Living Room Program invites residents to step out and energize the community

To build a sense of community among residents of apartments and neighborhoods, Taichung City's Social Affairs Bureau has been promoting the Multiple Dwelling Unit Humanities Living Room Program since 2020. This program introduces themed courses to encourage residents to go outside and enrich their lives. Today (20th), the Imagery and Creation of Stress Relieving Flowing Nihonga event was organized in the Qingguang Garden Community in Beitun District. Director Liao Ching-Chih of the Social Affairs Bureau, along with parents and children, painted on stones and canvases using pigments. This event allowed participants to experience positive interactions, stress relief, and mental and physical healing through the transformation of colors.
Director Liao noted that this year's Humanities Living Room Program is aimed at areas with a high density of apartment buildings, including Beitun, Xitun, and Nantun Districts. The program involves selecting four apartment buildings and four community development associations that show interest and potential. It introduces three themed courses on popular topics like mosaic tile coasters, balloon art, and eco-friendly cleaning agents. These events are held at community-provided venues, inviting residents to participate, get acquainted with their neighbors, understand their community, and collaboratively address issues.
The Social Affairs Bureau noted that apartment buildings are the predominant housing type today, leading to neighbors often being “the most familiar strangers.” As a result, the Humanities Living Room Program aims to help apartment building management committees and community residents voluntarily create mutual aid platforms and support each other, voicing community concerns and solving problems. The Ruilian Tiandi P Area and Dadi Fengqing Community in Xitun District not only increased their mutual aid awareness after participating in the courses but also became social welfare-friendly buildings, helping to disseminate social welfare information and fostering a livable and friendly residential environment.
